Okay, so today I decided to mess around with Hexagram 31, which is all about “Influence” or “Wooing,” depending on who you ask. I’ve been trying to get a better handle on the I Ching, and I figured, why not document my stumbling through it?
Getting Started
First, I grabbed my I Ching book – you know, the one with all the hexagrams and explanations. I also opened up a blank document on my computer to keep track of my thoughts. I always find it easier to learn when I am writing things down.
The Reading Itself
I used the coin toss method to generate the hexagram. I don’t have one of those fancy yarrow stalk kits, so coins it is! I flipped a coin six times, heads for yang, tails for yin, and noted down each line. It took a few minutes, and honestly, my hand started to cramp a little.

- First line: Yin
- Second line: Yang
- Third line: Yang
- Fourth line: Yin
- Fifth line: Yin
- Sixth line: Yang
Yup, that’s 31 alright – Lake over Mountain.
Making Sense of It
Then came the fun part – trying to figure out what it all meant. I read through the interpretations in my book. It talked about mutual attraction, courtship, and how important it is to be genuine and respectful. It’s like, don’t try to force things, let them happen naturally. Don’t be a creep!
I thought about how this applied to my own life. Maybe it’s about that project I’ve been trying to get off the ground? Or that new person I met the other day? Honestly, the I Ching can be kind of vague sometimes. So I jotted down some ideas, kind of brainstorming how this “influence” thing might play out.
Moving Forward
I am still not entirely sure what to do with this information. But I decided I am going to try to be more mindful of how I interact with people. More listening, less pushing my own agenda. We will see how that goes. The I Ching isn’t about predicting the future, it’s more about giving you some perspective, a different way of looking at things. And today, it reminded me to chill out and go with the flow a bit more.
I figured if anyone else has messed with the I Ching or has thoughts on Hexagram 31, I would share this with them.
