So, I was messing around with this hexagram thing, you know, from the I Ching, and I picked number 22. It’s called “Grace” or “Adornment,” something like that. I was curious, so I decided to dive in and see what I could come up with.
First, I grabbed my I Ching book and looked up hexagram 22. It’s made up of the trigrams Ken (Mountain) on the bottom and Li (Fire) on top. I read through the descriptions and the associated texts, trying to get a feel for what it’s all about.
After getting a basic understanding, I started to think about how I could represent this visually. I figured I could use some simple shapes and colors to symbolize the trigrams and their meanings.

- Mountain (Ken): I thought of a solid, stable triangle, maybe in a dark green or brown color.
- Fire (Li): I imagined flames, so I went with some wavy lines in red or orange.
Then I started sketching. I drew the mountain trigram on the bottom, a nice, sturdy triangle. Above it, I added the fire trigram, with its flickering flames. I played around with different arrangements and styles until I found something that I liked.
Once I was happy with the sketch, I decided to make it a bit more polished. I opened up a simple graphics editor on my computer and recreated my sketch digitally. I made sure the lines were clean and the colors were vibrant. I used a dark green for the mountain and a bright orange for the fire, keeping it simple but effective.
The Final Touches
Finally, I added some subtle gradients to give it a bit more depth. I didn’t want to overdo it, just a little something to make it pop. I saved the image and took a step back to admire my work.
It was pretty cool to see how a simple concept from the I Ching could be transformed into a visual representation. I felt like I had captured the essence of hexagram 22 – the stable, grounding energy of the mountain combined with the dynamic, illuminating energy of fire. It was a fun little project, and I’m happy with how it turned out.
It is a cool way to express an old concept. I like the picture I made. Maybe I will try another one later.
