Okay, so today I wanted to figure out what 373 divided by 13 is. I’m not gonna lie, math isn’t exactly my strong suit, but I figured, “Hey, let’s give it a shot!”
The Old-School Way
First, I grabbed a pen and paper. Yeah, I’m going old-school with this. No calculators yet! I remembered those long division problems from elementary school, the ones with the funny bracket thing. So I set it up like that: 13 outside the bracket, and 373 inside.
- I looked at the first digit, 3. Obviously, 13 doesn’t go into 3.
- So, I moved to the next digit, making it 37. How many times does 13 go into 37? I thought, “Okay, 13 times 2 is 26, 13 times 3 is 39… too big!” So, 2 it is!
- I wrote a 2 above the 7 in 373.
- Then, I multiplied 2 by 13, getting 26, and wrote that below the 37.
- I did Subtraction, 37 minus 26 is 11. Then, bring down the next digit which is 3.
- Now I got 113, though about”how many 13 in 113?”, I know 13 X 10 = 130 too big, I will try 13 X 8 = 104.
- I wrote 8 next to the 2 up top.
- I calculated 113 minus 104 and got 9.
So, I ended up with 28 with a remainder of * I want, I can keep it simple, my results is 28 R9.
