So, I got into this “hexagramme 14” thing today. It all started when I was looking for something new to try, something, you know, a bit different. I stumbled upon this I Ching thing, and hexagram 14, “Da You,” caught my eye. It’s supposed to be about “possession in great measure” or something like that. Sounded promising!
First, I needed to figure out how to actually do this. I mean, it’s not like I have a bunch of yarrow stalks lying around. Turns out, there’s a coin method. You flip three coins six times, and that gives you the lines for the hexagram. Easy enough, right?
I grabbed some coins – ordinary quarters, nothing fancy – and started flipping. Heads is 3, tails is 2. You add up the numbers for each toss, and that determines if the line is solid or broken. My first flip? All heads! That’s a 9, which is a solid line, but it’s also a “changing” line, meaning it turns into its opposite. Okay, a little complicated, but I was getting the hang of it.

- Flip 1: Heads, Heads, Heads (3+3+3 = 9) – Solid, changing
- Flip 2: Tails, Tails, Heads (2+2+3 = 7) – Solid
- Flip 3: Heads, Tails, Heads (3+2+3 = 8) – Broken
- Flip 4: Tails, Heads, Tails (2+3+2 = 7) – Solid
- Flip 5: Heads, Heads, Tails (3+3+2 = 8) – Broken
- Flip 6: Heads, Tails, Tails (3+2+2 = 7) – Solid
I wrote down each line as I went. I kept having to double-check the rules, making sure I was doing it right. It was slow going at first, but I got into a rhythm. Flipping, adding, writing… kind of meditative, actually.
After six flips, I had my hexagram. It was, in fact, hexagram 14! Fire over Heaven. Looked pretty cool. Then I looked up what it all means. There was a whole bunch of stuff about modesty and curbing the bad and all that. And because I had that changing line in the first place, I also had to look at hexagram 1, “Qian,” the Creative. Even more stuff to read!
The Result
Honestly, it was a lot to take in. I’m still not entirely sure what it all means for me, but it was definitely an interesting experience. It felt like I was connecting with something ancient and, well, a bit mysterious. I’m gonna keep this hexagram and the notes I made. Might try it again sometime, see if I get something different.
