Alright folks, gather ’round! Let me tell you ’bout this little experiment I did the other day. Saw some chatter online ’bout 62 grain versus 55 grain, and I thought, “Hell, why not see what the fuss is all about?”
So, first things first, I grabbed a box of each – some 62 grain green tips and some standard 55 grain brass. Nothing fancy, just your run-of-the-mill ammo.
Then, I headed out to my usual spot. Set up my targets – just some cardboard with circles drawn on ’em, nothing scientific. Wanted to keep it real, you know?

I started with the 55 grain. Loaded up the mag, took aim, and let ’em rip. The recoil was snappy, quick. Felt good. Then I switched over to the 62 grain. Right away, I noticed a difference. Recoil was a bit heavier, a little slower. Not bad, just different.
Here’s where it gets interesting. I wasn’t shooting for pinpoint accuracy, more like just seeing how they grouped. The 55 grain seemed to spread out a bit more, while the 62 grain held a tighter pattern. Could’ve been me, could’ve been the wind, but that’s what I saw.
Next, I wanted to see what they’d do to something a bit more substantial. So, I set up an old water jug. The 55 grain went right through, making a clean hole. The 62 grain? Well, that thing EXPLODED! Water everywhere. Definitely more oomph there.
Now, I ain’t no ballistics expert, but from what I saw, the 55 grain is faster, flatter shooting. Good for quick shots and plinking. The 62 grain, though, hits harder. Might be better for, ya know, things that need a little extra “oomph.”
Disclaimer: This was just my own little backyard test. Your results may vary. Always be safe and smart when handling firearms!

- Grabbed some 55 and 62 grain ammo.
- Headed to the range.
- Shot at paper targets.
- Shot at a water jug.
- Observed the differences.
Would I switch over completely to 62 grain? Probably not. But it’s good to know the difference, and I might just keep a few boxes handy for certain situations. That’s all for today, folks! Happy shooting!
