Okay, so today I decided to mess around with I Ching, specifically focusing on hexagram 19, which is called “Lin” or “Approach.” I’ve been curious about I Ching for a while, but it always felt a bit intimidating. Today, I finally dove in.
Getting Started
First, I grabbed my three coins. I don’t have any of those fancy I Ching coins, so I just used some regular quarters I had lying around. The idea is you flip the coins six times to build the hexagram from the bottom up.
- Heads = 3
- Tails = 2
The Coin Flips
Here’s how my coin tosses went:

- First Toss Heads,Heads,Tails.(3+3+2=8)
- Second Toss Tails,Tails,Heads.(2+2+3=7)
- Third Toss Heads,Heads,Heads.(3+3+3=9)
- Fourth Toss Tails,Tails,Tails.(2+2+2=6)
- Fifth Toss Heads,Heads,Tails.(3+3+2=8)
- Sixth Toss Heads,Tails,Tails.(3+2+2=7)
Figuring Out the Lines
I followed that, each toss gave me a number. Even numbers (6 or 8) are Yin lines (broken line), and odd numbers (7 or 9) are Yang lines (solid line). And that 6 and 9 are Old Yin,Old Yang will change to the opposite.
- 8 = Young Yin
- 7 = Young Yang
- 9 = Old Yang(Will Change)
- 6 = Old Yin(Will Change)
My tosses built up to these:
- 7(Young Yang):____
- 8(Young Yin):__ __
- 6(Old Yin Will Change):__ __
- 9(Old Yang Will Change):____
- 7(Young Yang):____
- 8(Young Yin):__ __
Putting It Together: Hexagram 19
So, putting those lines together, bottom to top, I got Hexagram 19.
Which is made of the trigrams Dui(Lake) over Kun(Earth).

Then I realize the second line and third line will change beacause I got Old Yang,Old Yin on tosses.
The Realization
Then the Hexagram 19 will change to Hexagram 24, which is made of the trigrams Zhen(Thunder) over Kun(Earth).
Looking It Up
I don’t really know what any of this means yet, so that’s my next step. I gotta find some good resources to help me interpret this. It’s been a fun little exercise, though! Feels like I unlocked a tiny piece of a much bigger puzzle.
