Okay, so today I decided to mess around with I Ching number 14, which is called “Da You” or “Possession in Great Measure”. I’ve been kinda curious about the I Ching for a while, so I figured, why not give it a shot?
First, I needed to figure out how to actually do the I Ching. I mean, I’ve seen those hexagram things before, but I had no clue how to generate one. Turns out, there are a few ways. I went with the coin toss method ’cause it seemed the easiest. Grabbed three coins, flipped them six times, and jotted down the results. Heads was 3, tails was 2, simple enough.
- First toss: Heads, Heads, Tails (3+3+2 = 8)
- Second toss: Tails, Tails, Tails (2+2+2 = 6)
- Third toss: Heads, Heads, Heads (3+3+3 = 9)
- Fourth toss: Heads, Tails, Tails (3+2+2 = 7)
- Fifth toss: Heads, Heads, Heads (3+3+3 = 9)
- Sixth toss: Heads, Tails, Tails (3+2+2 = 7)
Okay, so I had these numbers: 8, 6, 9, 7, 9, 7. Then, I learned that these numbers correspond to lines in the hexagram. Even numbers are broken lines (yin), odd numbers are solid lines (yang). And those 9s and 6s? Those are “moving” lines, meaning they change to their opposite. Whew, this is getting complicated!

So, based on my numbers, I drew out the hexagram. Bottom to top, remember? That’s how they do it. My hexagram ended up looking like this:
- Line 1: Broken Line (8 becomes a broken line)
- Line 2: Solid Line (6 becomes a solid line)
- Line 3: Broken Line (9 becomes a broken line)
- Line 4: Solid Line
- Line 5: Broken Line(9 becomes a broken line)
- Line 6: Solid Line
The first one I drew has solid in the first second and forth and sixth lines. The second one has a solid line in the second line, that changed!
I searched i ching 14, and it means “Possession in Great Measure”. I also got a second hexagram because of the changing line, which is interesting.
Honestly, I’m still not 100% sure what all this means. It’s talking about abundance and staying humble, which, yeah, I guess that makes sense. And the changing line? Still wrapping my head around that one. But hey, it was a fun little experiment. Maybe I’ll try it again sometime and see if I can get a better handle on the whole thing. It’s definitely more complicated than I thought!
