Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this I Ching thing, you know, the ancient Chinese book of divination. I was particularly interested in getting to know about hexagram 51. It’s called “Zhen” or “The Arousing” and is all about shock and thunder. Sounds intense, right?
So I got this app on my phone that helps you do I Ching readings. You’re supposed to focus on a question while you do it. My question was pretty general, just like, “What do I need to know about my current situation?” I’m always up for some self-reflection, you know?
The app then guides you through a process of virtually tossing coins to generate the hexagram. I followed the steps, really trying to concentrate. It’s kind of cool how random it feels, even though it’s digital. After six “coin tosses,” boom, there it was: hexagram 51. Double thunder. I thought, “Whoa, this is gonna be interesting.”

First, the app gives you the basic meaning of the hexagram. It talks about sudden change, unexpected events, and the need to stay grounded. There are all of these metaphors about thunder shaking things up but also bringing new growth. It suggests that while shocks can be scary, they also clear away the old and make way for the new. Pretty deep stuff.
- I read through the description of each line in the hexagram. Each line has its own little piece of wisdom.
- Some lines were about being cautious and avoiding unnecessary risks during times of upheaval.
- Others were about finding strength and resilience within yourself to weather the storm.
- One line even talked about how sometimes laughter is the best way to deal with fear! I love that.
After reading through all that, I spent some time just sitting with it. I thought about what’s going on in my life right now and how this “shock” theme might apply. There are definitely some things that feel a bit shaky and uncertain, but I started to see how they might actually be opportunities for growth, even though it does not feel like it at the moment. It’s like the hexagram was telling me to embrace the chaos a little bit and trust that things will work out.
I ended up writing down some of my thoughts in my journal. It’s good to have a record of these things, you know? I feel like hexagram 51 gave me a new perspective on things, and I’m kind of excited to see how it all unfolds. Maybe this “thunder” is exactly what I need right now to shake things up and move forward. It’s definitely something to keep thinking about.
