So, I’ve been messing around with this old book of wisdom, the I Ching, and let me tell you, it’s been quite a ride. Today, I wanted to share my experience with Hexagram 45, which is called “Gathering Together” or “Cui” in Chinese. Sounds simple, right? Well, it’s a bit more than just a get-together.
I started by flipping through the pages of my well-worn copy of the I Ching, you know, the one with the creased pages and scribbled notes in the margins. Hexagram 45 caught my eye. It’s made up of two unbroken lines and four broken lines, stacked in a specific way. This particular combination, I read, is all about unity and compassion. That sounded nice. I could use some of that in my life.
Diving into the Details

To get a better feel for it, I decided to do a little experiment. I grabbed my coins—yep, the old coin-toss method—and started flipping. Heads, tails, heads, tails… it’s a whole process. After six flips, I had my lines. Lo and behold, I got Hexagram 45. No changes, just the straight-up hexagram.
- First flip: Heads
- Second flip: Tails
- Third flip: Heads
- Fourth flip: Tails
- Fifth flip: Tails
- Sixth flip: Heads
With the hexagram in front of me, I started to reflect. I thought about my life, my relationships, my work, everything. I asked myself some questions like, “Where do I need to find more unity?” and “How can I bring people together in my community?” I even did a second session about the state of the world, and it’s a little terrible, maybe this is a way I can get a bit of advice from this old book.
Moments of Clarity
During this process, I had a few moments of clarity. It’s like the hexagram was speaking to me, you know? I realized that I had been feeling a bit isolated lately, and this was a reminder to reach out and connect with others. The whole idea of “gathering together” really hit home. I also had a little talk with my friend and share what I have discovered with my friend and got him into this practice, too.
I decided to take action. I organized a small gathering with some friends I hadn’t seen in a while. We met up, shared some food, and just talked. It was simple, but it felt really good. It was like I was putting the wisdom of the hexagram into practice.

Reflecting on the Experience
Looking back, I feel like this whole experience with Hexagram 45 has been pretty meaningful. It’s not just about flipping coins and reading an old book; it’s about applying these ancient ideas to my everyday life. I’ve learned that unity and compassion are super important, and sometimes, all it takes is a little gathering to remind us of that.
I’m definitely going to keep exploring the I Ching. It’s like having a conversation with an old friend who always gives you something to think about. And who knows, maybe I’ll organize another gathering soon. There’s always room for more togetherness in our lives, right?
