Okay, so I’ve been messing around with I Ching stuff lately, and today was all about Hexagram 39. Let me tell you, it was a bit of a journey.
First, I grabbed my three coins. I’ve got these old Chinese coins I use – I like the feel of them. I shook them up in my hands, really focused on the question I had in mind. It was about a project I’m working on, a bit stuck, you know?
Then, I tossed the coins. First toss… two heads, one tail. Okay, that’s a broken line. I jotted that down on my notepad. Repeated the process five more times, shaking and tossing, building the hexagram from the bottom up.

- Toss 1: Two heads, one tail (broken line)
- Toss 2: Three heads (moving broken line)
- Toss 3: Two tails, one head (solid line)
- Toss 4: Two heads, one tail (broken line)
- Toss 5: Two tails, one head (solid line)
- Toss 6: Three tails (moving solid line)
So, I ended up with broken, moving broken, solid, broken, solid, moving solid. I then drew lines, and I looked up that combination, and boom – Hexagram 39. “Obstruction.” Makes sense, given my project woes!
I then spent some time reading about it. Different interpretations, you know, the classic stuff, some more modern takes. It basically talked about facing difficulties, needing to persevere, maybe seeking advice from others. It was like a cryptic little pep talk.
I then change those moving lines. The moving broken line become solid line, and the moving solid line become broken line. I got a new Hexagram, and It is number 53.
I didn’t stop there. I’m trying to really, like, feel these things, not just read about them. So I sat down and meditated on the hexagram for a bit. Just closed my eyes, pictured the image of water over a mountain (that’s the imagery for 39), and thought about my project. Then, do the same things to Hexagram 53.
Honestly, it helped. No magic solutions, but it gave me a different perspective. Reminded me to take a step back, maybe ask for some help. I’m still working through it, but I feel a little less… obstructed. We’ll see how it goes!
