Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this I Ching thing, and I decided to try documenting my throws. Today, I focused on Hexagram 32, which is all about, like, duration and sticking with things. It’s made up of thunder above and wind below – sounds kinda intense, right?
Getting Started
First, I grabbed my three coins. I’ve got these old Chinese coins I use, but honestly, any coins will do. The important thing is to decide which side is heads and which is tails. I go with heads being 3 (yang) and tails being 2 (yin). Don’t ask me why, it’s just how I do it.
The Throws
So, you gotta shake the coins and throw them, like, six times. Each throw builds a line of the hexagram, starting from the bottom. Here’s how my throws went down:

- Throw 1: Heads, Heads, Tails. That’s 3 + 3 + 2 = 8. An 8 is an old yin line, which means it’s a broken line that’s gonna change.
- Throw 2: Tails, Tails, Tails. That’s 2 + 2 + 2 = 6. Whoa, another changing line! This one is also old yin.
- Throw 3: Heads, Heads, Heads. That adds up to 9. This means that it’s old yang, I recorded it down.
- Throw 4: Heads, Tails, Tails. That’s 3 + 2 + 2 = 7. Finally, a solid yang line that’s not changing.
- Throw 5: Heads, Heads, Tails. Same as the last one, another 7, another solid yang line.
- Throw 6: Heads, Heads, Heads. It’s 9, so it is an another old Yang line.
Building the Hexagram
Putting it all together, bottom to top, I got:
- Changing Yin (Broken line with an X)
- Changing Yin (Broken line with an X)
- Changing Yang (Solid line with a circle)
- Solid Yang (Solid line)
- Solid Yang (Solid line)
- Changing Yang (Solid line with a circle)
That’s Hexagram 32, alright. But because I had those changing lines, I also had to figure out the resulting hexagram – the one that shows where things are * old yin lines change to young yang and the old yang lines change to young * changed Hexagram looks like:
- Solid Yang (Solid line)
- Solid Yang (Solid line)
- Broken Yin (Broken line)
- Solid Yang (Solid line)
- Solid Yang (Solid line)
- Broken Yin (Broken line)
It turns out to be Hexagram 50, the one of The Cauldron. I have no idea of it, so I have to look up some more interpretations online.
So, yeah, that was my I Ching session for today. Still figuring this whole thing out, but it’s kinda fun to see what comes up and how it might relate to what’s going on in my life.
