Alright folks, gather ’round! Let me tell you ’bout my latest adventure: “dream about a dragon”. It was a wild ride, lemme tell ya.
So, it all started last week. I was staring at a blank canvas (digital one, mind you!), feeling totally uninspired. You know that feeling, right? Like your brain’s just a big ol’ empty room. I thought, “What’s the most badass thing I can imagine?” And boom! Dragons. Dragons are always cool.
First thing I did, I sketched out a bunch of dragon heads. Just quick and dirty, trying to get a feel for the shape and the attitude. Some were grumpy, some were majestic, some looked like they’d just woken up on the wrong side of the mountain. I kinda liked the grumpy one, so I decided to run with that.

Next up was the body. I grabbed some reference images of lizards, birds, even bats. I wanted my dragon to feel real, like it could actually exist. So, I looked at how their muscles worked, how their wings folded, all that jazz. Then, I started blocking out the basic shapes in my drawing program. Big shapes first, then smaller details.
Okay, here’s where it got tricky. The scales. Oh, the scales! I tried a bunch of different techniques. First, I tried drawing each individual scale. That was a disaster. Took forever, and looked totally unnatural. Then, I found a brush that simulated scales. Much better! I spent hours layering the scales, adding highlights and shadows to make them pop.
After the scales, I moved onto the details. Teeth, claws, horns, eyes… all the fun stuff! I spent a lot of time on the eyes. A dragon’s eyes are like windows to its soul, you know? I wanted them to look intelligent and ancient, like they’d seen a thing or two. I experimented with different colors and shapes until I got it just right.
Then came the background. I wanted something dramatic, something that would really set off the dragon. So, I went with a stormy sky and some jagged mountains. I used a lot of dark blues and purples to create a sense of foreboding. And of course, a little bit of lightning for extra flair!
Finally, after days of tweaking and fiddling, I finished it! I added some final touches, like a subtle glow around the dragon’s mouth and some mist swirling around its feet. I stepped back and took a good look. Not gonna lie, I was pretty proud of myself.

Here’s what I learned during this whole process:
- Reference is your friend: Don’t be afraid to use reference images! They can help you understand anatomy and create more realistic artwork.
- Break it down: Complex tasks can be overwhelming. Break them down into smaller, more manageable steps.
- Don’t be afraid to experiment: Try different techniques and approaches. You never know what you might discover.
- Patience is key: Good art takes time. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results right away.
So yeah, that was my “dream about a dragon” adventure. It was challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. I pushed myself creatively, learned some new skills, and ended up with a piece of art that I’m really happy with.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go stare at my dragon for a while longer. Maybe it’ll give me some ideas for my next project! Catch ya later!
