So, I wanted to mess around with some numbers today, just for kicks. I picked 53 and 48. No real reason, just those two.
First, I added them up. Pretty basic, right? Grabbed a piece of paper and a pen – I’m old school like that. Wrote down 53, then 48 underneath, and drew a line.
- 3 plus 8 is 11, so I wrote down 1 and carried the other 1.
- Then 5 plus 4, plus that 1 I carried, makes 10.
Bam! 101. That was easy.

Next, I thought, let’s see what happens when I subtract them. Same deal, wrote them down, 53 on top, 48 below.
- Can’t take 8 from 3, so I “borrowed” 1 from the 5, making it 4, and the 3 turned into 13.
- 13 minus 8 is 5.
- 4 minus 4 is 0.
So, the difference is 5. Still with me? Good.
Getting a Little Fancy
Then I got a bit more ambitious. I decided to multiply these bad boys. This one took a bit more scribbling.
- First, I multiplied 53 by 8 (the 8 in 48). 8 times 3 is 24, carry the 2. 8 times 5 is 40, plus the 2, is 42. So, I wrote down 424.
- Put a zero place holder,then I did 53 times 4. 4 times 3 is 12. carry the one. 54 is 20 plus the carried one is * I got 2120.
- Finally, I added 424 with 2120 and got 2544.
The Product is 2544! My brain was starting to feel it by this point.

I figured I’d do one last thing: division. I wanted to see how many times 48 goes into 53. I did tried to do 53/48.
- 48 goes into 53 one time.
- Subtract 48 from 53 is 5.
- 5 is remainder
So it’s 1 with a remainder of 5. And that’s about all the number fun I could handle for one day!
