Okay, so today I decided to mess around with I Ching, specifically hexagram 57. You know, the one about gentle penetration, like the wind or something. I’ve been feeling kinda stuck lately, so I figured, why not? Might as well try something different.
Getting Started
First, I grabbed my three coins. I don’t have any of those fancy yarrow stalks, so coins it is. I found a quiet spot in my apartment, tried to clear my head a bit – you know, the usual pre-divination stuff. I focused on my question, which was basically, “How can I get unstuck and move forward in my life?” Pretty broad, I know, but I wanted to see what the I Ching would throw at me.
The Tosses
- First toss: Heads, heads, tails. That’s a broken line, a yin line.
- Second toss: Heads, tails, tails. Solid line, yang.
- Third toss: Tails, tails, tails. Changing yin! Another broken line, but this one’s gonna change.
- Fourth toss: Heads, heads, heads. Changing yang! Solid line, but it’s also changing.
- Fifth toss: Heads, tails, tails. Another yang line.
- Sixth toss: Heads, heads, tails. Back to a yin line.
Building the Hexagram
So, I drew out the lines from bottom to top, like you’re supposed to. I ended up with two broken lines on the bottom, then two solid lines, followed by another yang line on the fivth position, and finally, a yin line at the top. This is it, Hexagram 57. I also noted the two changing lines – the third and fourth ones. Those are important, apparently.

The Changing Lines Thing
Because I had those changing lines, I also had to create a second hexagram. The changing lines flipped to their opposite. so third position is now solid(Yang) and fouth is now broken(Yin). This is Hexagram 44.
Making Sense of It All
So, I’ve got 57, with its gentle, persistent influence, and the changing lines pointing me towards 44. I looked at the texts and tried to relate to what I read. It’s talking about subtle influence, being adaptable, and not forcing things, also I need to pay attention to those changing lines and the second hexagram to figure out what the heck it all means for me.
It felt pretty accurate, to be honest. I realized I’ve been trying to force things too much, pushing for results instead of letting things develop naturally.
It was a good little exercise. I don’t know if I’m suddenly “unstuck,” but I definitely feel like I have a new perspective. I’m going to try to be more like the wind – gentle, persistent, and go with the flow a bit more. We’ll see how it goes!
