Okay, so last night I had this super weird dream about ants, and it got me thinking – maybe I should try to, like, actually do something with ants in real life. I mean, why not? So, this is my whole journey of messing around with ants.
The “Brainstorm” (aka Random Googling)
First things first, I had zero clue what to do. I just knew I wanted to observe them, I guess? I started by Googling stuff like “easy ant farm” and “watching ants.” A lot of the stuff was for, like, little kids. But it gave me some ideas, and I have a new thought that maybe I can dig them in my garden.
Getting My Hands Dirty (Literally)
Next up, I went outside to my garden. I remember seeing ant hills around before, especially near this one old tree stump. I figured that’d be a good place to start.

I grabbed a small shovel and a clear plastic container – the kind you get takeout salad in. My plan (if you can even call it that) was to gently scoop up some ants and dirt and see if I could keep them alive for a bit. Super scientific, I know.
Finding the ants was easy. Disturbing their home? Not so much. I felt a little bad, but I carefully dug around the edge of the anthill, trying to get a mix of ants, eggs (those little white things), and some of the dirt they lived in.
My Makeshift Ant Habitat
Back inside, I dumped the contents of the container onto a tray, then pick them up again with the ants. Then I poked some tiny holes in the lid of the container for air. I also added a few drops of water and a tiny crumb of bread. Seemed like ant food, right?
Honestly, it looked pretty pathetic. But hey, it was a start!
Watching and Waiting
For the next few hours, I mostly just stared at the container. At first, the ants were all frantic, running around like crazy. But slowly, they started to calm down a little.

I noticed a few things:
- They were super organized, even when they were freaking out.
- Some ants were way bigger than others (I guess those were the worker ants?).
- They seemed to be carrying the eggs and the dirt around, trying to rebuild something.
The Great Escape (and Subsequent Failure)
So, this is where it all went downhill. I woke up this morning, and guess what? Ants. Everywhere. Apparently, my little air holes were more like giant escape hatches.
They were all over my kitchen counter, heading straight for a sticky spot where I’d spilled some juice. Lesson learned: takeout containers are NOT ant-proof.
Cleanup and Conclusion
After a frantic cleanup operation (involving a lot of soapy water), I decided to call it quits on my ant-keeping experiment. It was fun while it lasted, but clearly, I’m not cut out to be an ant farmer.
Maybe I’ll stick to dreaming about ants instead. At least those ones can’t escape into my kitchen.
